Bag End-Middle-Earth Map 1.7.5/1.7.4
Author: Edinburgh update: 01/16/14
- Bag End was a luxurious smial under The Hill in Hobbiton. It had many rooms, but only those on the west had windows, which opened on to the garden’s grassy slope and meadows beyond. It was built circa T.A. 2885 by the wealthy Bungo Baggins of Hobbiton as a wedding gift to Belladonna Took, a daughter of Gerontius Took, the Thain of the Shire. Bungo built the main entrance to Bag End on a path off The Hill Road, on the north side of Hobbiton. He and his wife only had had one child, the famous Bilbo Baggins (born 2890). The couple died relatively young by Hobbit standards (in 2926 and 2934 respectively), leaving Bilbo as the master of Bag End, where he resided as a bachelor.
Bag End overlooked its immediate neighbours, a series of poorer smials on Bagshot Row. Bilbo added a potato garden to Bag End’s western slope when Hamfast “Gaffer” Gamgee, of Number 3, Bagshot Row, became its gardener in T.A. 2961. Gamgee himself often employed Holman Greenhand who lived in a hut south of The Water. The next-door neighbour to Gamgee was Daddy Twofoot of Number 2.Bilbo was unexpectedly visited by Gandalf and a party of Dwarves in T.A. 2941. He suddenly left on the quest to Erebor, and did not return to Bag End until over a year later, when he was just in time to prevent it being auctioned off. In T.A. 2980 Bilbo adopted his orphaned nephewFrodo Baggins. They lived together in Bag End until their joint birthday Party in T.A. 3001. Bilbo then left the Shire, and Frodo became the master of Bag End.Frodo himself left the Shire, in T.A. 3018, on his quest to destroy the One Ring. In preparation for this he sold Bag End to his cousins, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins and her son Lotho. During the War of the Ring, the fallen wizard Saruman and his henchmen evicted Lobelia and murdered Lotho, taking Bag End for themselves. When Frodo returned to the Shire at the end of the War, the squatters were dealt with summarily, and Frodo resumed residence in Bag End. Samwise Gamgee soon moved in as well, together with his new wife Rose Cotton. However in only a few short years, Frodo left Middle-earth, leaving Sam and his growing family as masters of Bag End for generations. The author borrowed “Bag End” from the name of his aunt’s farmhouse in theWorcestershire village of Dormston. It was supposedly intended as a translation of the word Labin-nec in the fictional Westron language. This had much the same meaning, and a similar relationship, to Labingi (the Westron form of Baggins) as Bag End to Baggins.).
